Terry Rozier remains on the books of the Miami Heat after the franchise decided against waiving him before Wednesday afternoon’s deadline. The point guard is currently on unpaid leave after his arrest in October.
Miami had a decision to make this week, as only $24.9m of his $26.6m salary was guaranteed. They will now have to pay the $1.7m that Rozier is guaranteed for the remainder of the current season. It also means that the Heat have the full $26.6m in salary cap space taken up by the out-of-action player.
There is still time for another team to trade for Rozier before the February 5 deadline, although the NBA still hasn’t clarified whether moving the contract to another franchise will be possible. Commissioner Adam Silver said during last month’s NBA Cup Final that it is an “unprecedented situation,” and that he’s personally sympathetic to the Heat’s plight. He said that a unique solution may be necessary for this specific case.
the Heat weren’t aware of this probe when trading for Rozier
Rozier allegedly intentionally left a game in 2023 – a pre-planned scheme in which he claimed he was hurt – when playing for the Charlotte Hornets. His friends shared and sold this insider information to bettors. Sportsbook operators flagged the suspicious wagering activity at the time, which prompted a federal investigation. However, the Heat weren’t aware of this probe when trading for Rozier in January 2024.
Rozier still maintains his innocence, pleading not guilty in December to money laundering conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy charges.
