Indian cricket is always a matter of discussion when we talk about captaincy or cricket in general. Everything they do is a blockbuster, and the same has been the case with Indian test captaincy. The Jasprit Bumrah Test captain debate did come up, but disappeared pretty quickly.
Following the surprise retirement of Rohit Sharma, it was Shubman Gill who took over, and it will be key to see how he performs. But in the inaugural week of the India vs England test, Jasprit Bumrah has opened up about test captaincy.
[Revealed] Why Didn’t Bumrah Want To Be The Captain?
When the whole world had the question of why not Jasprit Bumrah Test captain, the premier fast bowler came out talking. Bumrah, talking to Sky Sports, stated that he had already informed the board he can’t be captain.
The major reason for that would be his workload and his injury. In the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy as well, Bumrah was injured, so a lack of fitness was the reason he didn’t want to be the captain.
Bumrah had become an occasional captain and did a good job, but the long-term captaincy wasn’t made for Bumrah. According to the advice of his doctors, Bumrah had to let go of the dream of captaining India in the long form.
Social Media Reaction To Jasprit Bumrah’s Test Captaincy
The social media reaction to Jasprit Bumrah not getting the captain has been a mixed bag. Some feel it is the right decision, while others feel that Bumrah as a player is more important. The internet seems divided.
[Breaking News] Bumrah, The Part-Time Captain
Readers might find it amusing, but Jasprit Bumrah’s test captaincy was possible only in bits and pieces. The management provided him with an opportunity to captain the 3 games he would play.
But Bumrah was sure he didn’t want 2 captains in the same Test series. To the cricket fanatics unaware, Bumrah will only be playing in 3 test matches for the England series in order to maintain his workload.
[Update] Jasprit Bumrah’s Recent Injuries
Jasprit Bumrah has been injury-prone right from the start. The major reason for that has been his awkward bowling action, which makes matters worse. Having said that, his injuries have been impactful even for the Indian team.
In recent times, Bumrah suffered a back injury that ruled him out of the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy bowling innings. Along with that, Bumrah also missed the Champions Trophy, which India won.
The impact doesn’t end right there, as he missed the first half of the IPL as well. All in all, things didn’t go right. Fans might be surprised that he has already suffered a back injury once.
The previous back injury put him out of the Indian team for more than a year. So the Indian team management, along with Bumrah, isn’t taking the risk and load of captaincy.
My Personal Take
Jasprit Bumrah is one of the finest fast bowlers in the world, but you have to agree that his actions make him injury-prone. He has had a fair share of back injuries, and one more could end his career right there.
The decision of the BCCI not to give him captaincy is the right option. Players who can be part of the team regularly needed to be given the nod, and so did Shubman Gill.
